Entry 1: Roman Eyerman
Roman Eyerman had been involved in scouting since 1920, when Father Burkley started Troop 8 at St. Mary. The troop is one of the oldest in Central Ohio. Mr. Eyerman was active in the Boy Scout movement for more than 50 years, until his death in 1971. He was a longtime member of the Scout honorary Order of the Arrow and was the group’s first Vigil Honor member in Central Ohio. Mr. Eyerman earned the highest Scout honors, including the Eagle Scout award as a boy; the Silver Beaver award, top honor for adult leaders; and the St. George award, Catholic Church award for adult scout leaders. He was a member of the Catholic Church and Protestant Committees on Scouting, and was the first person in the diocese to receive the highest award presented by the National Council of Catholic Youth for adult leadership. As chairman of the Central Deanery Scouting Committee, he was responsible for the selection and presentation of the Ad Altare Dei awards which stress the religious aspect of the scouting program. Ad Altare Dei means “To the altar of God.” James Duemmel of St. Mary was the recipient of the award in 1950.
